He hasn’t yet bought a donkey, but he’s sewn a saddle.
Local Oral Tradition
The donkey-themed proverbs continue. Our equivalent? Don’t put the cart before the horse. Doing things in the right order matters. A man who has not yet bought a donkey doesn’t know what size saddle he needs. I’m tucking this proverb away in my mental collection to be pulled out the next time we need to discourage a friend from taking the Lord’s Supper prematurely. First saving faith, then you go under the water, then you take the Lord’s Supper. The right order matters to God, so it matters to us. Yet the importance of doing things in the right order has been surprisingly hard to communicate effectively. I’m hoping this proverb will help.
